Specialised refractions for children and teenagers
As a family optometrist, we have a particular interest in children’s eye health, and so we offer a range of eye care services for children and teens. Our eye care services include a specialised refraction test. A refraction is an eye exam that measures a patient’s prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
At De Smedt Optometrists, our eye exam includes checking for refractive errors and assessing the overall health of your child’s eyes. We can also assess binocular and oculomotor skills and perform a colour vision test if your child requires one.
Aside from the regular refraction eye exams, some symptoms can develop between appointments. As a parent, knowing the common signs and symptoms of eye diseases is essential to prevent further damage to your child’s eye health.
These symptoms include:
- Red, itchy, watery eyes
- Sensitivity to light
- Inward or outward turning eyes
- Excessive squinting, blinking or rubbing the eyes
- Lack of concentration
- Covering or closing one eye
- Holding objects too close to the face
- Avoiding books and TV
- Visible frustration or grimacing
- Tilting the head or unusual posture
